New Meeting Format
Beginning January 2019, our new meeting format will open with —
A FREE HANDOUT that may be on such topics as writing do's and don'ts, devices and techniques to improve the quality of storytelling and writing, aspects of the writing life (debunking rhetoric and myths), publishing markets (that need submissions) or current publishing trends or aspects of successful marketing, etc. This is followed by a short discussion period. Then— FEEDBACK will be given on work brought in by members. Because of time constraints, bring in 6-8 properly formatted manuscript pages. However, to conserve paper, printing may be done on both sides of a page. Pages are to be numbered (place the number in the upper right corner). As always, members are encouraged to take charge of the feedback they want and to ask questions. SPARK THE IMAGINATION — After the feedback session, we'll write from prompts or exercises which enable participants to take practice a craft element or explore ideas and themes. Such exercises may be shared — no feedback will be given unless requested. SURPRISES — We'll explore other writing styles like poetry, memoir, and nonfiction articles and essays to writing synopses or how to submit to publishers. There may be discussions on scams and vanity publishers, the benefits and drawbacks of social media, explanations of self-publishing, independent publishing, print-on-demand (POD), etc. TAKE HOME A MONTHLY WRITING CHALLENGE — To supercharge the imagination between meetings, members may take home a Writing Challenge and write up to 750 words. The work can be any style, any genre. Think outside the box, have fun, spur the imagination! |
